Ultrasonic leak detectors are “listening devices”, they capture and amplify ultrasonic sound (which is what leaks generate). Because of this, you don’t need refrigerant to pick up, just nitrogen. And also sometimes find the leak, it's the way to go. The fieldpiece and inficon units in heated diode are also excellent.
Ultrasonic will deliver the best results for actually trying to pinpoint leaks; So if your work is such that you need to be able to find and repair the leak, not just sell someone a new coil, it's going to be the most The new ultrasonic detectors are incredible. Didn't get a chance to try it on an a/c system but they are supposed to be great at finding any pressurized leak.
Trace gas works however the gas mate i use works very well. Hydrocarbon leak detectors work much better than hfc leak detectors. Even though the gas mate works well i don't like it that much. The cps one goes off on soap bubbles!!!!
